The Matty’s 2015: Best Supporting Actress

And we’re back at The Matty Awards, celebrating the best of the best in film, according to “yours truly.”

I’m your host, Matty W. Kelley.

Let’s get started on what I think may be the most difficult category for me in this whole entire awards show. Reason being: Where are all the great supporting roles for women? Come on Hollywood, let’s write some juicy supporting roles for the ladies. They are the fairer sex, and much easier on the eyes too.

So, who will receive the “Golden Nose” statuette for Best Supporting Actress?

And the nominees are:

Patricia Arquette, (Boyhood).
Arquette’s role as a single mother trying to juggle family, work, school, and relationships in this coming of age film is magnificant. She literally had to watch herself age 12 years while making this movie. For many actresses this would be a tough task to take on, but she performed the role gracefully and flawlessly. (I believe she got better with age.)
Is a “Golden Nose” in her future? Stay tuned.

Laura Dern, (Wild).

Dern plays a free-spirited mother who is trying to help her children see that life is beautiful, even when obstacles present themselves. She is a strong woman who loves the sunshine, her kids, and the beauty around her. She tries to pass this on to her daughter before cancer takes her.

This story is incredibly moving and Dern reminded me of my mother in many ways. But was she in the film long enough to win “The Nostrils?” We’ll see.

Keira Knighley, (The Imitation Game).
Knightley plays Joan Clarke, a code breaker in World War II (when women weren’t allowed to be code breakers because men were idiots and thought women were dumb… Who’s the idiots now?)
Anyhoo, it’s the true story of the earliest invention of the computer and it is a magnificant film. Benedict Cumberbatch stars opposite her and the two of them play extremely well off of each other. Knightley is a hot force to be reckoned with in this film.
Winner of a “Matty?” Soon folks, soon.

Emma Stone, (Birdman).
America’s newest sweetheart, Emma Stone finds herself in one of the best films of the year in “Birdman.” She plays Birdman’s daughter, Birdgirl… No she doesn’t, she plays Sam, daughter of world famous actor, Riggan Thomson, (who happens to be Birdman). Sam is a recovering junkie trying to get her life back together by hanging around her dad’s playhouse.
It’s a wonderful film loaded with an incredible cast. But does she stand out enough to entice me to hand her a “Golden Nose?” Hmm.

Meryl Streep, (Into The Woods).

Streep, best known for being the best female actor alive today, stars as a witch in an unconventional mish-mash musical of fairy tales, stacked with stars, song, and strife. Streep plays the wicked witch to perfection. But maybe this film may have been a tad bit too long and tad bit too “not good” for her to walk away with a “Matty Award”… But hey, stranger things have happened.

Maggie Gyllenhall, (Frank).

Maggie Gyllenhall plays “Clara,” a longtime friend of the title character, “Frank” (acted by Michael Fassbender). Frank is an enigmatic young man who needs to wear a giant mask over his head all the time. Some may find this odd, (and it is) but as the story goes along, you find out that he has a mental illness. Clara is such a true friend that she tries to protect him from the harms of the outside world. It’s truly a wonderful film with some splendid acting by Gyllenhall, (which is hard for me to say since I’ve been pissed at her since she stole the role of Batman’s girlfriend, “Rachel Dawes” right out from under Katie Holmes’ feet! Grrr!).

And finally, Megan Fox, (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
Yeah-yeah, I know, none of you guys think she’s a great actress, BUT, every movie I see her in, I love! Is it her acting? Is it her flashy style? Is it those “come hither” eyes?
Well, I don’t know what it is about her but ONCE AGAIN she was great in “TMNT.”
Oh yeah, now I know what it is…. She’s smoking hot and I’m a red-blooded male.

There’s your SEVEN nominees for “Best Supporting Actress.”

And “THE MATTY” goes to……..

Maggie Gyllenhall!
Whoa, I bet you didn’t expect that! (Neither did I!) She wasn’t even invited to the Oscars this year, but tonight she’ll be going home with a “Golden Nose” statuette!
After crunching all the numbers down at The Matty Academy, she was the one most deserving of the award.
So proud of you, Maggie Gyllenhall. You were phenominal in a phenominal film that unfortunately was overlooked by the so-called Oscar Academy. Great job.

Who WILL win the Oscar: Patricia Arquette.

Who SHOULD win the Oscar: Patricia Arquette.

So there you have it, one category down, four to go.
Tune in next time for Matty’s “Best Supporting Actor” winner.
