Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

bannerI don’t know what everyone’s whining about. I saw “Sin City: A Dame To Kill For” and I really liked it.

Now, when I say “everyone” I’m directing my focus towards the critics, these so-called “top professionals” who gave this film a 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It truly is not that bad… Not even close.

“Sin City 2” is actually a really good and interesting film that unfortunately possesses some minor flaws. These flaws can easily be overlooked though, if you just want to be entertained.

I, Matty W. Kelley, consider myself three things:

1.) I consider myself the second best movie reviewer on the entire planet.

2.) I consider myself lucky to be able to see as many movies as I do.

3.) I consider myself to be in the top 3% of most physically attractive people in the world.

You want to know something? I almost bailed out of seeing this film because of the terrible press it was getting. I noticed how poorly it did at the box office and I ALMOST said “Ah, screw it, I can wait for this one to hit VHS before seeing it.” But I didn’t. I liked the first one a lot, so I decided to throw my shekels at this flick.

And I’m glad I did.

Now if you’re a red-blooded male (or female), and you’re just looking to catch a glimpse of the delicious Jessica Alba naked, then you’re barking up the wrong stripper pole. BUT, if you’re that same red-blooded male (or female) looking to catch a glimpse of Eva Green naked, well then come on in, because she is nude for the entire film!

Personally, I think Eva Green is the most interesting, intriguing, manipulative, and sexy character in this film (and the film is loaded with sexy female characters.) She definitely had the best storyline in the film.

Anyway, the story is much like the first film. There are a bunch of unique characters living in (or on the outskirts of) Sin City. And while all of them have their own story, each one’s life intertwines with the other characters in the film.

You have a corrupt Senator Roark (Powers Boothe) being a power and money hungry sleeze that couldn’t give two hoots about his illegitimate son (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).

There’s also Nancy Callahan, a professional pole dancer who has both a death wish and a vendetta against the senator.

There’s Marv, (Mickey Rourke) a hulking, flat-faced, Rocky Dennis-type misfit who is somewhat of a guardian angel to Nancy.

You’ve got Dwight (Josh Brolin) who is completely whipped on Ava (Eva Green) and pretty much gives in to her every demand. (but you’d give in too if you saw all of her glorious nudity in this film.)

And who can forget about all the sexy chicks who patrol and control the mean streets of Sin City? They’re everywhere, and they’re bad-ass.

There are so many other characters in this film too. Too much to tell. It’s a movie that you’ve got to see to keep up with all the characters.

What I will say is that there are some great actors in the film. Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Jaime King, Ray Liotta, Rosario Dawson, and Dennis Haysbert are all in this movie, along with a slew of other great thespians.

Let’s get back to the reason I think this film may have bombed.

First off, it took WAY TOO LONG for this prequel/actual time/sequel to come out. The original “Sin City” hit theatres in 2005. Why did we have to wait so long for this one? This film should have been green-lit and in production in 2006, not 2014.

Secondly, with the film coming out so many years later, I had forgotten about some of the characters from the original. I couldn’t quite remember who Senator Roark’s ugly, yellow son was until I went home and IMDb’d the original film. (It was Nick Stahl, from “Terminator: Rise of the Machines” fame.)

And thirdly, (and this isn’t a big knock on the film) maybe, just maybe, the film went one storyline too long.

I think the Nancy Callahan storyline could have been edited out. Nancy kept hallucinating Hartigan (Bruce Willis’ character from the original) throughout the film, and although it fit the movie fine, I just think the film would have stood on its own with the other storylines that were already running their course. (especially Eva Green’s storyline.)

Then again, if Jessica Alba got nude I have a funny feeling that her storyline would have fit just perfectly.

So, in closing, I really liked this film. It had a couple minor hiccups but it did not deserve the beating that it took from the so-called critics.

The only critic that really matters is you….. and of course, ME!

Matty W. Kelley, reporting.

Fun Fact: In the original film the character of Dwight is played by Clive Owen. In this one he is played by a newly sculpted, plastic surgerized Josh Brolin.

Fun Matty Fact: I did not know that “Fun Fact” until I pieced it all together after I left the cinema.

And that’s why I love movies. They keep you thinking even after you’ve left the theatre!
