Birdman

BirdmanAstonishing. Explosive. Brilliant. Incredible. Amazing. Stunning.

These are adjectives that are used way to much when professional movie reviewers (much like myself) are trying to get their point across when they love a film.

Well, I’m not going to join the masses when it comes to my review of “Birdman.” I’ll just write it the only way I know how to write it. I’ll “Mattify” it.

So here it goes.

Holy (bleep)! This movie was (bleeping) awesome!

I’m so sorry about the (bleeping) cussing.

I’ve always had a pretty vulgar vocabulary. But I don’t mind using “cuss” words when it comes to getting my point across. Sure, I know my mother would wash my mouth out with a bar of soap if she heard me using profane language like this, but what the (bleep), this is “Matty’s Movies” and I’ll be damned if I can’t speak my mind when it comes to (what I think) may be the best (bleeping) movie of the (bleeping) year.

That’s right, I said it. “Birdman” is the best (bleeping) film of the year.

Now, THAT right there is a pretty powerful statement.

“Birdman” is the 93rd movie I’ve seen this year and it is without a doubt the leader in the clubhouse.

Move over “Boyhood.” You are a great and wonderful film that has so much vision and forward thinking that it will end up getting plenty of noms and plenty of awards… But YOU are no “Birdman.”

Step aside “Gone Girl.” You are a brilliant, thought provoking movie with a bit of crazy tossed in there… But YOU are no “Birdman.”

And you, “That Awkward Moment,” don’t you even show your face in my movie review, because you (bleeping) sucked. It’s because of you that I almost quit movies for life. YOU are not even “Birdman”s excrement.

“Birdman” is the perfect film.

I do not say that very often. Barely ever. I do say that certain films are (bleeping) awesome. I do say that certain films are Oscar caliber films. But rarely do I ever say that something is the “perfect” film.

Director Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu is an INCREDIBLE filmmaker. I don’t even know this man from a hole in the head, but the way he shot this movie was stunning to say the least.

First let me tell you what the film is about.

A washed up actor named Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is an over the hill, movie star trying to regain his glory by putting on a Broadway play.

That’s the abridged version of this story. It is so complex. Riggan also has to deal with crazy actors (Naomi Watts, Andrea Riseborough, Edward Norton). He is trying to re-connect with his daughter (Emma Stone). He’s still in love with his ex (Amy Ryan). He and his manager/best friend (Zack Galifianakis) are constantly dealing with issues. And finally, he has to deal with the voice in his head named “Birdman.” (who just so happens to be the iconic superhero he played twenty years ago that made him famous.)

This is truly a brilliant film. What is incredible about this movie is not only the superb acting and story telling, but the direction that it was shot. Now, I don’t know too much about how to make a movie, but the way the director goes into a scene, then out of a scene, and right into the next scene without even stopping was mind-blowing. I know there had to be edits but it was flowing so seamlessly that you couldn’t even stop to take a breath.

This had to be extremely hard on the actors too. But hey, making the perfect movie is never going to be easy. (Just ask Garry Marshall. He tried to make the perfect movie with “New Year’s Eve” and that’s the worst (bleeping) movie ever.)

So let’s talk “Matty and Oscar Awards.” (The two most prestigous awards shows in Hollywood.)

Edward Norton. In-(bleeping)-credible. I’ve loved him in so many movies. (Primal Fear, Fight Club, American History X) This is some of his best work I’ve ever seen.

Naomi Watts is great. She was nominated for an Oscar for her role in “The Impossible”. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was nominated for a supporting role for this.

Zack Galifianakis is everything. I only know him as hilarious, but this kat can act! Loved him in this role.

Emma Stone is a delight. She picks her roles well and I think this is the best role she’s ever picked. I’m glad she got to work with this mountain of talent.

And Michael Keaton. YOU, my good man are astounding, incredible, brilliant, amazing, extrordinary, remarkable. Whoever picked you for this role should have a job in Hollywood for the next 7 years. (I don’t give out lifetime contracts.) This was the perfect role for the right man… And Michael Keaton was the perfect man for this role.

At this point in my article I usually throw a little jab at the film. You know, something I noticed that just wasn’t right. But I can’t throw any jabs. This movie was perfect…. Ok, maybe it could’ve been better if Spider-Man and Bumblebee were in it.

What!? Spider-Man AND Bumblebee were in it?!

IN-(BLEEPING)-CREDIBLE!

Like I said in the beginning of this article, this is the perfect film. There are not enough adjectives in the thesaraus for “incredible” to quantify how great a film this is.

So I’ll just say it the only way I know how to…

This movie was fucking awesome.
