Boyhood

BoyhoodI was born premature on March 31, 1970.

I was also premature on March 11, 2011 when I quickly rushed out of the theatre and spewed out that “Battle: L.A.” would win ‘Best Picture’ at the Oscars.

On May 4, 2012 I was a tad bit premature when came shrieking out of the movie-house bellowing “The Avengers” would get a ‘Best Pic’ nod.

In 2013 I held out a little longer, not releasing my “prematurity” until November 4, when I busted out of the old cineplex moaning that “Blue is the Warmest Color” would sweep the Academy Awards.

And on July 16, 1987 I was premature with my first girlfriend… although she didn’t seem to mind because neither of us knew what the hell we were doing.

Needless to say, I’ve been premature pretty much all my life.

But that ain’t gonna stop me from being premature tonight!

You know what? Actually, tonight I’m going to be mature. I’m going to be mature in telling you all that I have found the “hands down” winner of this year’s “Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: Film of the Year.” Continue reading Boyhood

I Review My Family’s Showers!

ShowerMost of you out there on planet Earth know me as Matty W. Kelley, professional movie reviewer. You are correct. I am a professional movie reviewer, and I’m the 2nd best movie reviewer in the entire world.

But just because I review movies doesn’t mean that I don’t have other interests. I do. I’m a very complex and unique individual. I’m a character. I know this because my mother always said to me, “Matty, you’re a character!”

Well, today I’m going to break off from my movie reviewing expertise and tell you about something that is near and dear to my heart. It’s something that I pay close attention to and I feel needs to be brought up in conversations all around water coolers across America. Continue reading I Review My Family’s Showers!

The Amazing Spider-Man, Locke, and MORE!

UtahWho wants some MWK quick reviews?

Well let’s do this!

“BRICK MANSIONS”: Great to see Paul Walker back in my life. Love him as an actor. Movie is not too awesome though. The other “tough guy” in the film looks too much like Ted (Josh Radnor) from “How I Met Your Mother” (and we all know he ain’t tough.) I gave this film 2 out of 5 stars.

“THE OTHER WOMAN”: Corny and cute. Kinda right up my alley. Cameron Diaz was fine, Leslie Mann was fine, and Kate Upton was FINE!!! Feel good chick flick film… 3 out of 5 stars. Continue reading The Amazing Spider-Man, Locke, and MORE!

Draft Day, Under The Skin, Dom Hemingway, and More!

holiday-lights-christmas-wallpaper1It’s been some time since I’ve written a review, so let me get you caught up on what MWK’s been up to.

For the past month or so I have been working on a television show for Animal Planet. (and no, I am not the animal that the show is focusing on.) It has been great work and a fun learning experience, but it takes up a lot of time, so I haven’t been able to pen my reviews. But I have been able to sneak out and catch quite a few flicks. Continue reading Draft Day, Under The Skin, Dom Hemingway, and More!

Noah

Noah“Who built the arc?

Rock People, Rock People!

Who built the arc?

Lots of Rock People built the arc!”

Wait, that’s not how the song goes at all!

But that’s what director Darren Aronofsky would want you to believe with his new interpretation of the biblical story of Noah, the man who save all the creatures of this planet from the great flood. Continue reading Noah

Divergent

ArcLightCinemasHere we go again, yet another “Young Adult” themed movie. (or a “YA” movie, as they say in the industry.)

There have been quite a few of these films in recent years, most notably, “Twilight,” “The Host,” and “The Hunger Games.”

All these films seem to be geared toward young adults, typically women, who want to go to the theatre and see a young girl (much like themselves) kick some ass. That was the case in the “Twilight” series with Kristen Stewart being the strong female lead. (Although I found her to be somewhat of a weak female lead. She never had an answer for anything, and she could never make up her mind about nothing (-5, double negative.) Continue reading Divergent

Son of God

Son of GodIt has been a long movie awards season, but it’s finally over. The Oscars were great, The Globes were even better, and once again, THE MATTY’S were the apex of all movie awards shows. Thank you all for tuning in, but now it’s time for me to get back to what I really love to do… review movies.

Since January 1st, I have seen 20 new releases. I have reviewed just a handful of them. Reason being, I have put all my focus into “The Matty Awards,” leaving me no time to sit down and dissect all the great films that are in theatres right now.

Well that changes today. Let’s get after it.

I recently saw “Son of God.” Continue reading Son of God

THE MATTY’S: “Best Picture- 2014”

Gold TrophyWe’ve made it!

It’s been a long five weeks at The Matty Academy, but we have reached the pinnacle of “The Matty Awards.”

It’s not easy being the #1 movie awards show in America. We bust our humps all year long down at The Academy, trying to give you the most thorough and detailed movie reviews throughout the year, and we put the same effort into THE MATTY’S.

I’m serious, it takes FIVE weeks to put on this awards show, and right now I’m just about ready to get back to reviewing newly released films like “Pompeii,” “Vampire Academy,” “Robocop,” and “The Lego Movie.” (Everything is awesome!)

But not until we give out THE MATTY for “Best Picture of the Year.” Continue reading THE MATTY’S: “Best Picture- 2014”

THE MATTY’S: “Best Actor- 2014”

MattysOscarPicksAnd we’re back at the 2014 Matty Awards, the awards show that honors the best of the best in film.

We are in the fourth round of a five round fracas, this time pitting the men against each other. (Round 3 was a humdinger of a battle between the ladies with Adele Exarchopoulos delivering the knockout punch with her performance in “Blue is the Warmest Color”).

Now it’s time for the men to start tossing bombs. And it’s a stacked class for this melee. So let’s get right to it.

DING-DING!

And the nominees for “Best Actor in a Feature Film” are: Continue reading THE MATTY’S: “Best Actor- 2014”

THE MATTY’S: “Best Actress- 2014”

OscarPicks_TheLadiesWelcome back to the third installment in my five part series known as THE MATTY’S, Hollywood’s most legitimate, non-partisan, uncorruptible movie awards show, hosted by yours truly, Matty W. Kelley!

We’ve “reeled” our way through the first two categories with “Best Supporting Actress” honors going to June Squibb for her spunky role in “Nebraska,” and Jared Leto receiving the MATTY statuette for “Best Supporting Actor” for his turn as “Rayon,” the cross-dressing sidekick in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Congratulations to the both of you. Continue reading THE MATTY’S: “Best Actress- 2014”
